Props Micro Scene

This assignment focused on bringing in a few objects into one scene and then laying them out to tell a small immersive story using stamps, object placement, and lighting. I used a barrel from the first assignment as well as a glass bottle, cordial, and lantern. I further created a flour sack from tutorial videos and then made a iron poker and dagger as my first objects without tutorials. The assignment also required three point lighting, a HDR panorama, and a textured ground plane.

I had consistent issues with applying materials back in Maya, especially with folder organization and which values needed RAW and alpha is luminance turned on. I had textures disappear numerous times and also did not organize my lambert materials properly for IDs which led to some confusion on my part. To remedy this I had to physically write down the process and go to office hours for help which generally solved the issues and I have a much better understanding of texturing because of it.

Overall, I really liked how my scene turned out and I was thankful that I did not run into too many issues when bringing all the parts together. My final render looked great and it was very satisfying to see all the materials and lighting come together to create a crisp and clean looking scene. For some reason my metal rings on my barrel look more like stone than metal but it cannot all be perfect.

I encountered a few problems during the texturing and UV phase. Creating a proper UV for the flour sack was very frustrating because the sack portion would not unfold properly. My solution to the problem was cutting the sack into four different shells and then sewing them back together and the unfolding. This did the trick and the texture on the sack turned out very good. I also had some issues getting the handle on my dagger to unfold properly too because I had a bevel edge going along the center of it. I had the same edge on the blade but the shape of it made it possible for a proper unfold. Unfortunately this was not the case for the handle and after trying to cut the beveled edge a few different ways I was still not able to unfold it properly. Ultimately, I had to scrap the edge entirely because of time constraints but was thankful that I could use it on the blade edge. I applied a leather material to the handle and I think it looks better without the original edge down the middle.
